As part of the UK’s Independent Venue Week, IDLES have shared a new socially distanced performance of Carcinogenic taken from their latest album Ultra Mono.

The five members of IDLES performed the raucous track across locations in their hometown of Bristol, including The Louisiana, Exchange, The Mother’s Ruin, The Old Duke, and Trinity Centre.

Independent Venue Week is a nationwide initiative that celebrates music venues and the people that operate and work in them. The local businesses serve an important cornerstone of the UK’s vibrant music community and offer artists – new and experienced – an opportunity to showcase their craft.

The UK’s live music industry has faced unprecedented struggles in the past year. In the face of COVID-19, venues across the nation have been forced to call off live gigs to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

To make a bad situation worse, new artist visa policies following Brexit could mean that future tours to countries in the EU will be insurmountably costly for artists and their crew.

Mark Bowen, guitarist of IDLES, spoke of Independent Venue Week’s importance as a rallying point amongst those in the music industry.

“Now more than ever independent musicians and the music industry at large need to unite to keep from being decimated,” he said. “Between the pandemic and a government who not only don’t care about the future of the arts – especially independence within the arts – but take a proactive role in its diminishment, independent venues are at greatest risk because they are mostly small businesses, not interested in profit or investors but in the nourishment of creative, open-minded, critical thinking.”

He continued: “Independent venues are the fertile soil in which the future of the performing arts will grow. They are where your future favourite band will play, where the best song ever written will be tested out, where the new can bud and flourish. They are also vital for a sense of community and union, something people sorely need and miss at this time, without them we’re all fucked.”
